Sump Pumps

Sump Pump Installation & Replacement in Nicholasville & Lexington, KY

A sump pump is the last line of defense between a hard Kentucky rain and your basement floor. We install new pits and pumps, replace pumps that quit, add backup pumps so a power outage doesn't flood you, and run the discharge far enough from the house that the water doesn't just circle back in.

In detail

Sump Pumps in Nicholasville, Lexington & central Kentucky

New sump pit installation

If water is coming up through the floor or in at the base of the walls, a sump pit gives it somewhere to collect before it spreads. We cut in the pit at the low point, set a quality pump with a check valve, and wire it to a dedicated outlet. On a recent flooded-basement job in Nicholasville we installed a new pit and pump and ran the discharge line out across the yard so the water stays away from the foundation.

Sump pump replacement

Most sump pumps last somewhere around 7 to 10 years, and they usually fail during the storm, not before it. Burned-out motors, stuck float switches and failed check valves are the common culprits. We swap the pump, replace the check valve and test it with water before we leave.

Battery and water-powered backups

Heavy storms and power outages tend to show up together, so a primary pump alone isn't enough insurance for a finished basement. A battery backup pump takes over when the power goes out. A water-powered (hydro) backup uses your home's city water pressure to pump the pit with no battery to maintain. We'll explain which one makes sense for your house.

Getting the water away from the house

A pump that dumps water right next to the foundation just pumps the same water twice. We run buried discharge lines out to a pop-up emitter in the yard, and we install downspout drains that carry roof water away from the house. (We don't do gutter work, just the drain lines.)

Questions

Common questions

How do I know if my sump pump is about to fail?
Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The pump should kick on quickly, empty the pit and shut off. If it hums, runs without moving water, or doesn't start, call us before the next storm.
Battery backup or water-powered backup: which is better?
A battery backup works anywhere but the battery needs replacing every few years. A water-powered backup has no battery and runs as long as you have city water pressure. We'll look at your setup and recommend one.
Can you add a sump pump to a basement that never had one?
Yes. We install new pits, set the pump, and run the discharge line away from the house.
Do you install gutters?
No. We install downspout drain lines that carry water from your downspouts out into the yard, but we don't do gutter work.
